Philip J. Guerin, Jr., MD, Director

A graduate of Fairfield University and Georgetown University School of Medicine, Dr. Guerin continues to be one of the leading family psychiatrists in this country. He is the founding director of CFL which began as an outgrowth of the seminal Family Studies Division at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  His publications are numerous and influential and his collaboration with Dr. Fogarty and others have made major contributions to the field of family psychiatry. A gifted teacher and clinician, he has taught legions of mental health professionals including psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric social workers, marriage and family therapists and nurses, as well as educators, clergy, and primary care physicians.  He is currently working on refining his model for cognitive systems intervention, relationship systems coaching and his brilliant second career as a balladeer.            

                                               

David R. Chabot, Ph.D.

Dr. Chabot did his undergraduate work at Fordham University and his graduate work at the University of Minnesota where he received his doctorate in Clinical Child Psychology. His most current research and publications include work on the scale of differentiation and validation of the concept of relationship pursuit and distance. Dr Chabot is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Fordham University.      

                                                                                     

Nancy Edelman, CSW, ACSW

Ms Edelman is a graduate of Finch College and New York University School of Social Work. Her areas of clinical concentration are divorce mediation and most recently, helping military casualties of the Iraqi war and their families.             

                                                                                     

Leo F. Fay, Ph.D.

Dr. Fay received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Fordham University and a doctorate in sociology from the New School for Social Research. He is a co-author of the Evaluation and Treatment of Marital Conflict and Working With Relationship Triangles: The One, Two, Three of Psychotherapy and is a retired Associate Professor of Sociology at Fairfield University.      

                                                                                     

Barbara Gewirtz, LCSW

Ms Gewirtz is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley with a master's degree from Simmons College Graduate School of Social Work. In addition, to her work at the Center, she has been on the faculties of Fordham and Yeshiva, and is presently part time faculty of New York University School of Social Work and is also an approved supervisor for the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).                                                                                                  

                                                                                     

Katherine B. Guerin, Ph. D.

A graduate of the College of New Rochelle with a master's degree in education from Fairfield University and a doctorate in clinical psychology from Fordham University, Dr. Guerin is one of the co-founders of the Center. Her current clinical and research interests include the goodness of fit between children's temperament and their family system and the successful launching of young adults.  

  

 

Donna Gundy, MEd, LMFT

A graduate of Smith College and Columbia University with a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology, Ms. Gundy is an approved supervisor of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and has served as coordinator of the Center's continuing education for Marriage and Family Therapy. Her history on the faculty of the Center includes membership on the Child and Adolescent Project, the Chronic Illness Project and the Marital Project. Ms. Gundy specializes in dealing with marital conflict, including problems in communication, affairs, and stepfamilies.

           

Judith G. Kautto, CSW, ACSW

Ms. Kautto is a graduate of Cornell University and the Boston University School of Social Work. She is a co-author of Evaluation and Treatment of Marital Conflict and Working With Relationship Triangles: The One, Two, Three of Psychotherapy.  In addition, she is the former director of post graduate education at CFL and, with Leo Fay, the first director of the Marital Project.

 

Mary J. Giuffra RN, Ph.D.

Dr. Giuffra received her doctorate from New York University where she taught in the graduate program for many years.  She was also professor and dean of the nursing program at the College of Mount St. Vincent in Riverdale, NY and remains an active board member numerous universities and hospitals in the region. An active practitioner of family systems and other systemic models that foster the link between mind and body, Dr. Giuffra is a sought-after speaker, workshop leader and author.

 

Charles O. Sherman M.A.

Mr. Sherman is a clinical anthropologist trained in the tradition of Albert Scheflen M.D. and others. He has a graduate degree from the New School for Social Research and at one time served as the chairman of the department of Social Science at Adelphi University. His past work on the Center faculty has included the production and maintenance of the Center’s video library. He collaborated with other faculty members on the South Alabama School of Medicine project and worked with Eileen Pendagast on the continuing refinement of Family Systems Training (FST) as an approach for educating the community on how families work.
